Flag Referendum

If you did not know our country is about to vote on which flag we should have to represent our country.....
  1. Discuss with your parents which flag they are going to vote for & why. Do you agree or disagree with your parents perspective? If your parents are okay with you sharing their opinions via our blog you can also comment on this, but as voting is confidential it is important you ask first as they may not want you to share their opinions with the world!
  2. If you could vote in the flag referendum which flag would you choose & why? Justify your answer! (Comment on 1 and 2 below).
  3. Flags of the world - select a flag from each of the six continents (there are actually 7 continents including Antarctica but as this is not owned by any one country we will not include it).  If you don't know what a continent is you will need to find out! Neatly sketch (use a ruler!) and shade with coloured pencils a flag from each continent and comment on the following - country flag belongs to, what the colours and symbols symbolise, and why you like it - don't forget to justify your opinions!

    1. I like reading different people views on the flag. Union Jack is our link to England. I wonder does the government not want the connection with the Queen anymore?

    1. John Key many people have different views on him. Would be interesting to discuss with Mum how she feels the money could have been spent - this has been a hot topic in the news last year.

    1. It would have been interesting to see where the money could have been spent. Why do you both want to keep the old flag?

    2. Hi Anahera, Why do you feel changing it is pointless? What do you think would have been a better choice to spend this money on?

  8. I think that we should change the flag. Because since the old flag looks to much like Australia's flag, terrorists will be confused.

    1. We are very close to the Australian flag with only 1 start different. Interesting that you feel the terrorists may get confused, I hope New Zealand never have to deal with terrorists attacks.

  9. I personally think that we should change because it is to close to Australia's flag and NZ is known for the silver fern and farming. But I also think the money could have been spent on something better.

    1. Rowan I like how you justify your answer. We do use the silver fern for branding of many aspects in New Zealand. What do you feel the money could have been better spent on?

  10. My father is voting for the old one because the new on doesn't display NZ much. He hopes that in a few years this opportunity will come up but with flags that display NZ better.

  11. My mum and dad think the old one because people went to war and the common wealth games under this flag and that's a lot of money on a stupid flag

    1. We did go to Commonwealth games under the flag, I hadn't heard anyone mention that and has made me think about what the athletes points of view maybe. Do you know why we go to the Commonwealth games?

  12. I have enjoyed reading everyone's comments. I wish I had asked my Grandad when I was with him for his 103rd last month. He went to Fiji during the World War 2 and was on guard there. I know within my family we are all discussing reasons to keep the flag or to vote for the new flag but really have not made a discussion.
